Meet Healthy Mama Gui, Mara’s Mom
My Healthy Mama group was so amazing this summer, I wanted to share them with you! Over the next month I’ll be sharing interviews with some of my fantastic mamas. We had so much fun together exchanging recipes and chatting about everything from how to get our kids to eat veggies to how to pickle beets. In fact, I’m offering this program again in the fall because it was such a hit.
Featured Mama: Guillermina Schinder
I was so happy to meet Gui this summer. Her enthusiasm is contagious, even virtually!
Q: Please share a little about yourself with us.
A: I’m Gui, Mara’s mom. I never thought I would define myself like that, but since January 26, 2012, at 1.01 a.m. that is who I am. And I’m loving every minute of it, including the late night nursing sessions and the lack of time to do pretty much anything I used to do.
Q: Why did you join Healthy Mama?
A: Becoming a mom has been incredible. But it has also meant a lot of changes in our lives. I joined Healthy Mama thinking I would get a few easy and healthy recipes. But, boy was I in for a treat. The Healthy Mama program recipes are super easy. It also gave me the opportunity to connect to other mamas and learn so much. The discussions were very thoughtful and informative.
Q: Before joining Healthy Mama, what were your biggest challenges with healthy eating?
A: We ate quite healthy, but I felt we were in a “salad rut,” There were days when we had had enough or ran out of salad stuff and all I could think of was a quick but plain pasta with tomato sauce.
Q: How has you and your families life changed as a result of participating in Healthy Mama?
A: I’ve been much more adventurous and organized in the kitchen and tried out recipes I would probably wouldn’t have otherwise. Making sure I have the essentials at home to cook up and substitute ingredients has been key to avoid the lazy pasta dish.
Q: What was your favorite recipe from the program?
A: The quinoa pasta salad was a favorite as well as the easy kale salad.
Q: What are you excited about going forward in terms of healthy eating and cooking?
A: At six months, Mara is beginning to explore foods, so I am very excited to offer her healthy and tasty meals that we can all enjoy.
A: Cabbage salad is one of my favorites, but for it to be “perfect” I prepare it the way my grandmother used to: thinly slice cabbage and put in a big bowl. Add salt and “massage” cabbage with your hands until it looks kind of moist. Let it rest for a little bit and then add lots of lemon juice and a little bit of olive oil. That’s it. Very simple but refreshing and delicious for cabbage and lemon fans. You can also add capers or any kind of nut that you like for extra crunch.
Thank you Gui for being awesome! You rock!
